".brand here" domains to be approved by ICANN !?

What is this madness I'm hearing now?

Some domains that are likely to appear: .sport, .food, maybe .music, or even places such as .manchester

Today, there are only 22 "generic" top level domains (gTLDs) that exist, these are domains such as .com, .org and .info added to this are about 250 country-level domains like .uk or .cn.
If this change is approved then several hundred new gTLDs are expected to come into existence...

If you think it'll be a case of another £10 a year for a domain then you better take a seat before you continue reading.
It won't be cheap to operate a domain name suffix, the application fee is £115,000, ($185,000), and winners will have to pay £16,000, ($25,000) annually after that.

This is going to cause a lot of issues with copyright and people wanting these new domains. It'd be interesting to see how this is dealt with, will it be a first come first serve situation?

In my opinion it's a bad idea.
To me, you have your domain, (mcompute.co.uk) which is a "company" in the UK, so from that domain we see that it's a computer related UK based company, then I could have subdomains to determine sections of the site, instead of a new domain..
