How to create scan lines (Defining a pattern)

How to make scan lines

"Scan lines" can be useful for a lot of things, if not to just add a bit more detail and they're easy to create.

Steps

1. Create a new document. (Height : 4px ; Width : 4px)

5. Using the Pencil tool draw a diagnal line on the new layer.

6. Go to edit > Define pattern and call it anything you want. I called mine "scan lines"

Using the scan lines

On the desired image / layer, right click it and go to "Blending Options..", a new windows will appear, go down to "Pattern Overlay" and select it from the drop down box. You can also reduce the opacity in there.

You've actually done the classic mistake, if you use that the scanlines tend to be more spaced out on the picture

Using the patterns below gets you some nicer effects (B = black square, W = white square, T = transparent square)

Diagonals:
TBW
BWT
WTB

The other way:
WTB
BWT
TBW

Vertical:
BTW
BTW
BTW

Horizontal:
WTB
WTB
WTB

This way you can use lighten or darken depending on which you need for the image, and it saves you faffing about with inverting the colours

As you do...
