Well, not quite the hovering spaceships and asthmatic men with black masks on, but we're halfway there already apparently...

Experts at the University of Arizona have developed a system where 3D holograms (like those of Yoda talking to Luke) can be recorded, replicated and transitted in what's referred to as "real time" (though the delay between refreshes is two seconds).

Scientists see this as a breakthrough in fields such as diagnostic medicine, engineering, home entertainment (that's us) and could have immense implications on advertising

The effect is made from "a novel photorefractive material capable of refreshing holograms every two seconds" according to one of the professors in the university's Optical specialisation Department.
