Magic wand only works if the background and render colour are vastly different, most of the time it's a lot quicker and more accurate to render using the pen tool or (on the rare occasions) the marquee tool.
This, for example, would be a LOT quicker on pen tool
I bet that image didn't render properly, because of the shadow.
On Photoshop you can use the Magic Erase.

> Click and it will usually do it.
If it doesn't get rid of everything, zoom in to 500% with the eraser tool at 1 pixel and get rid of the stray dots.

as I said above, this only works on a single colour background, and AFAIK only CS4 and CS5 have the magic erase
